The U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, National Institute of Justice’s Notes From the Field series features leading voices in the criminal justice field to share their strategies for responding to the most pressing issues on America’s streets today. Dr. Frank Straub, Director of the National Police Foundation’s Center for Mass Violence Response Studies (CMVRS), recently wrote the article, “The Importance of Community Policing in Preventing Terrorism,” discussing the importance of building trusting relationships and establishing cross collaboration between public safety, mental health services organizations, educators, and other community groups in preventing terrorism—drawing from a promising partnership between the CMVRS, Boston Police Department, the North American Family Institute, and the United Somali Youth in establishing a Youth and Police Initiative Plus program, as well as lessons learned from various independent reviews of critical incidents conducted by the CMVRS.
